Frequently Asked Questions

Why offer a direct download?

The direct download link is for people with android devices that run alternative operating systems or custom ROMs. Running a custom ROM grants them the freedom to choose whether to allow Google applications and services to run on their device. Without Google Play Services, they cannot use the Google Play Store and they must install apps through alternative means.

Micro operates using a decision-making framework based on values. Our first core value is 'People First'. This means that the actions we take must first consider your preferences and values. If you value device sovereignty, then the chances are quite high that you're running a custom ROM. If you're running a custom ROM, then you probably know how to verify a checksum. And if you know how to do that, then you most certainly do not need a third-party marketplace's (TPM) permission or approval to run software on devices that belong to you.

Is this option available for iOS? No. Apple does not allow application distribution beyond their marketplace and without their permission. There are ways around it, of course, but we can't lead you down the rabbit hole of "jail breaking" and "side loading". ;)
Dev Rant

Do you think you'd ever buy a car that would require you to pay to ask its manufacturer to install a steering wheel cover? Certainly not. That would be ridiculous. Just look at the terms used to circumvent the restriction. "Jail Breaking" and "Side Loading". As if you're doing something shady, unsafe, or illegal. The proper term is "install" and framing it otherwise is simply a way to control how people think and subsequently direct their behavior. It is not wrong to do what you want with your property, as long as you are not violating someone else's rights. I cannot imagine trading my life force for value credits, and then trading those value credits for a device filled with restrictions ungoverned by the laws of physics.

IT people, send links about Linux phones to al@microbytes.io. Thanks for reading.

Are there any differences between what's here, and what's on the TPM?

Feature wise? No. The apps are created from the same set of files. There may be a delay between what's posted here and what's in the TPM, but that that's beyond our realm of control. Remember, TPMs are under no obligation to prioritize Micro over their own agendas.
